Sonoma Coast

photograph by Ken Kingsbury

This dramatic photo of the California north coast presented an unusual challenge. What pattern can complement an image with such disparate elements: jagged rocks, surging waves and ocean foam – a scene that in detail will never repeat?  Keying off recently discovered “einstein” (= “one stone”) patterns that have no repetitive elements, I’ve made an arrangement incorporating angular components for the rocks and softer, rounded ones for the water and sand, organized in a way that doesn’t repeat anywhere in the piece.
